These are all the dates and times of the Severn Bore throughout 2026. As with last year's dates and times, each bore is graded from 1 to 5 stars. 1 star signifies the smallest bore prospect, and 5 signifies the largest. Unfortunately, 2026 does not see a bore prospect greater than 3 stars, meaning the chances of a significant surfable tidal bore are low. The Severn Bore is a natural phenomenon that is enjoyed by canoers, kayakers, surfers, and spectators alike.

Severn Bore 2026 - Minsterworth

📍 Minsterworth, Gloucestershire

Minsterworth is one of the most popular and accessible places to watch the Severn Bore. The best viewing spot is along the riverbank footpath near St. Mary the Virgin Church, where you get a clear upstream view of the bore as it rounds the bend.

For parking, small roadside lay-bys along the A48 are commonly used, but they fill quickly for 4-star and 5-star bores. Arrive early and park considerately; this is a working rural road.

If you’re setting your sat-nav, use GL2 8JG (church area) or search for Minsterworth directly.

Just a short walk away is The Severn Bore Inn, a classic riverside pub that becomes a social hub on big bore days. Expect it to be busy during high-rating events. They offer great food on the days a 4 or 5-star bore happens

Severn Bore 2026 - Stonebench

📍 Stonebench, Gloucestershire

Stonebench offers a slightly quieter, more atmospheric experience. The bore approaches along a long, sweeping stretch of the River Severn, which makes it ideal for photography, where you can often see the wave building before it reaches you.

There is a small car park at Stonebench (look for 'Stonebench Car Park' on maps), but it’s limited. For bigger bores, it fills fast. Overflow parking is sparse, so arrive well in advance.

Set your sat-nav to Stonebench, Gloucestershire, or search for 'Stonebench Severn Bore viewing point'.

There aren’t cafes directly on the riverbank here, so it’s wise to bring supplies. If you’re planning food before or after, Minsterworth’s pubs are only a short drive away.

📍 Over Bridge, Gloucester, Gloucestershire

Over Bridge is one of the easiest access points, but one of the busiest. The bore passes beneath Over Bridge before continuing upstream, making it a convenient location with excellent visibility from the riverbank.

Parking is usually easiest at Over Farm Market, which offers larger parking areas (though restrictions may apply during major events so always check ahead). From there, it’s a short walk to the river.

For sat-nav, use GL2 8DB (Over Farm area) or search 'Over Bridge Gloucester'.

Over Farm also has a cafe and farm shop, making this one of the more comfortable viewing spots if you’re planning to linger. On major 5-star bores, expect significant crowds - this is a hotspot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be a 5-star bore this year?

No. In 2026, there are no 5-star or 4-star bores predicted. There are several 3-star bores throughout the year, which are smaller and generally not powerful enough for reliable surfing.

Where is the best place to view the Severn Bore?

The three best places to see the Severn Bore are Minsterworth, Stonebench, and Over Bridge, where commanding views of the bore surging up the river Severn can be enjoyed.

Is there parking to see the Severn Bore?

Parking in Minsterworth, Stonebench, and Over Bridge is very restricted. It's advised to arrive early and be considerate to locals, avoiding blocking roads, businesses, and property access. Parking is limited and fills quickly during 4 and 5-star bores.

Is it safe to see the Severn Bore?

Yes, it is generally safe to view the Severn Bore if sensible precautions are taken. Wear appropriate footwear, remain on stable ground, and avoid climbing steep or muddy riverbanks. The River Severn has strong currents, so keep a safe distance from the water’s edge.

Can I surf the Severn Bore?

4 and 5-star bores are typically strong enough to surf. Some experienced surfers may attempt larger 3-star bores, but conditions are less reliable. Always consider your ability, water temperature, river hazards, and local safety guidance before entering the water.

How often do tidal bores occur on the River Severn?

Tidal bores occur several times each month when tidal conditions align. However, most are small (1 to 3 stars), with only a few larger bores occurring each year during strong spring tides.

How are the tidal bores graded on the River Severn?

The Severn Bore is graded from 1 to 5 stars based on its size and strength. A 1-star bore is small and may be barely noticeable, while a 5-star bore is the largest and most powerful, capable of producing dramatic wave fronts and surfable conditions.
